Year 6 Outline Planning
Autumn Term 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are excited to share with you an overview of the curriculum and learning opportunities your child will experience in Year 6 this term. This letter is designed to keep you informed and to help you support your child’s learning at home.
Our Learning This Term
English
Our English curriculum is based on high-quality books. In Autumn 1, we will be focusing on journeys and migration. In Autumn 2, we will look at evolution and inheritance. Below you will find the books and the final outcome for each text:
- Autumn 1.1: The Arrival by Shaun Tan – Extended Narrative
- Autumn 1.2: The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick – Biographies
- Autumn 2.1: The Promise by Nicola Davies – Narrative Poetry
- Autumn 2.2: The Last Bear by Hannah Gold – Newspaper Article
Mathematics
Year 6 will begin the term by looking at Place Value before moving on to ensure that children can confidently solve mathematical questions using shape and number facts quickly and effectively. It is vital that all children practise their times tables and number bonds regularly so that they have rapid recall of these facts.
Reading
Our reading curriculum involves daily whole-class guided reading lessons based around the class reader and a range of fiction and non-fiction texts that link to our wider curriculum. We have planned for progression, diversity and challenge using carefully selected texts that are exciting and relevant, while also developing key comprehension, inference and retrieval skills.
Science
In Science, the children will be developing their understanding of electricity, learning how circuits work, exploring the function of different components, and investigating how to design and test their own electrical systems safely. Later in the term, we will turn our attention to evolution and inheritance, where pupils will study how living things adapt to their environments over time, consider the work of Charles Darwin, and explore the fascinating connections between genetics, variation and survival.
History and Geography
In History, the children will be learning about the Industrial Revolution, exploring how this period transformed Britain through advances in technology, transport and everyday life. They will investigate the impact these changes had on people at the time and how they continue to shape the modern world. In Geography, our focus will be on climate change, where pupils will examine the causes and effects of global warming, consider the role humans play, and discuss ways we can all make a difference in protecting our planet.
Art/DT
Year 6 will explore how artists embrace aspects of their experiences of life – using their background, culture, race, gender and interests to inform and shape their artwork. The children will create a layered portrait to explore aspects of their own identity, thinking about line, shape, colour, texture and meaning.
PE
We are extremely lucky to be joined by Achieve4All for our PE sessions this term. Year 6 will have PE on Tuesday and Friday. Children will focus on a range of skills, including coordination, agility and control of ball skills, in carefully planned lessons from our PE curriculum.
Computing
This term we will be learning about the World Wide Web as a communication tool. We will then investigate different methods of communication, before focusing on internet-based communication. Finally, the children will evaluate which methods of internet communication are most effective for particular purposes.
PSHE
In PSHE we will be focusing on relationships in the Autumn term. We will discuss strategies to manage friendships and peer influence, recognise and manage pressure, and explore how to respond respectfully to prejudice and discrimination. This will be done through a variety of methods, including circle time, whole-class discussions and assemblies.
RE
In RE, the children will be exploring key questions from Christianity. They will consider “What Would Jesus Do?”, thinking about how his teachings guide Christian beliefs and actions in the world today. Pupils will also examine the question “Why is Jesus the Messiah?”, learning about Christian perspectives on Jesus’ role and significance, and reflecting on how these ideas influence faith and practice.
Homework and Reading
- Homework will be set on Friday and due on Wednesday.
- We encourage daily reading at home, with time to discuss and enjoy books together.
