Year 6 Outline Planning - Spring Term 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are excited to share with you an overview of the curriculum and learning opportunities your child will experience in Year 6 this term. This letter is designed to keep you informed and to help you support your child’s learning at home.

Our Learning This Term

English
Our English curriculum is based on high-quality books. In Spring 1, we will be focusing on Utopia vs Dystopia. In Spring 2, we will look at protest and activism. Below you will find the books and the final outcome for each text:

  • Spring 1.1: Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen – Own version narratives
  • Spring 1.2: Paradise Sands by Levi Pinfold – Narrative prequel
  • Spring 2.1: Suffragette: The Battle for Equality by David Roberts – Persuasive campaigns
  • Spring 2.2: Stonewall by Rob Sanders & Jamey Christoph – A visitors guide

Mathematics
Year 6 will begin the term by looking at Fractions/Decimals/Percentages/Ratio before moving on to ensure that children can confidently solve mathematical questions by revising shape and number facts quickly and effectively. We will begin looking at algebra as well. It is vital that all children practise their times tables and number bonds regularly so that they have rapid recall of these facts.

Reading
Our reading curriculum involves daily whole-class guided reading lessons based around the class reader and a range of fiction and non-fiction texts that link to our wider curriculum. We have planned for progression, diversity and challenge using carefully selected texts that are exciting and relevant, while also developing key comprehension, inference and retrieval skills.

Science
In Science, the children will be developing their understanding of light, learning how our eyes work, exploring the function of different components, and investigating light in different areas. Later in the term, we will turn our attention to classification, where pupils will study how living things are classified, they will consider the work of classification scientists, and explore the fascinating connections between different living things.

History and Geography
In History, the children will be learning about The Impact of War, how wars are detrimental even on small scales. How wars impacted children’s lives in our locality. They will understand how the World Wars impacted daily life. In Geography, our focus will be on migration (‘On the Move’), where pupils will examine the causes and effects of migration and consider the push and pull factors.

Art/DT
Year 6 will explore how artists create a relationship between Print and Activism. They will use collage, stencils and drawing to create a final piece. The children will also look at frame structures, research key architects relevant to the design of frame structures, as well as making and designing their own.

PE
We are extremely lucky to be joined by Achieve4All for our PE sessions this term. Year 6 will have PE on Tuesday and Friday. Children will focus on a range of skills, including coordination, agility and control of ball skills, in carefully planned lessons from our PE curriculum.

Computing
This term we will be learning about the Programming and Spreadsheets. This term we learned how to use variables in programming, designed and improved our own games, turned our ideas into code, and shared our finished creations with others. We also learned how to collect information, organise it in a spreadsheet, use formulas to calculate answers, plan an event using our data, and present our results clearly.

PSHE (Living in the Wider World)

This term, pupils learned why showing compassion to others matters, explored different ways they can help protect and care for the environment, and discovered practical methods for keeping track of money and managing their own finances.

RE
In RE, the children will be exploring key questions from Hinduism. In this unit, pupils explored important Hindu beliefs such as dharma, karma, samsara and moksha, and learned how these ideas link to the story of the man in the well. They connected these beliefs to the ways Hindus live, including life stages and aims, and looked at real examples of how Hindus put their beliefs into practice. Pupils also reflected on why beliefs like karma and dharma matter and how they might influence people and the wider world.

Homework and Reading

  • Homework will be set on Friday and due on Wednesday.
  • We encourage daily reading at home, with time to discuss and enjoy books together.

Communication

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via stokenham@southhamsfederation.org.uk. Working together, we can ensure your child has a successful and enjoyable year.

Thank you for your continued support — we are very much looking forward to a positive and productive term ahead.
