Year 1
Stokenham Area Primary School
Outline Planning for Spring Term 2026 Year 1
Maths
In the first half of the term, we will be learning about shapes and numbers. Pupils will focus on recognising, composing, and manipulating both 2D and 3D shapes. They will use part–part–whole models to partition numbers up to 10 and use mathematical manipulatives to represent numbers within 10. Children will also practise positioning and estimating numbers on a number line, and they will explore the concepts of odd and even numbers.
In the second half term we will be looking at the unit of work 'Additive Structures'. We will be writing equations in different ways; creating number stories and finding missing numbers within different equations.
English
In English we will continue to improve the children’s punctuation, sentence structure and handwriting skills.
We will be looking at different texts throughout the Spring Term. These include: 'The Odd Egg’ by Emily Gravett, ‘The Comet’ by Joe Todd-Standton, ‘Dadaji’s Paintbrush’ by Rashmi Sirdeshpande and ‘Julian is a Mermaid’ by Jessica Love. These texts will allow us to look at story writing, a non-fiction report and poetry.
We will continue to complete a weekly spelling test every Friday as well as frequent reading practice sessions. Please ensure your child continues to read every night to help develop their confidence, fluency and comprehension.
Science
The children will be learning about Everyday Materials. They will understand that an object is a “thing” that can be seen and touched. Objects have names and often have a purpose; for example, a cup is an object, and its purpose is for drinking. Pupils will explore common materials such as wood, paper, metal, glass, plastic, water, rock, rubber, and cotton. They will learn that materials have different physical properties: some are hard while others are soft, some are rough while others are smooth, and some are dull while others are shiny. Children will also discover that materials can be grouped in different ways based on their physical properties.
Foundation Subjects:
Geography
In Geography we will be looking at the unit of work ‘Where we are’. We will be:
- naming the countries of the UK
- naming the capital cities of the four countries in the UK
- describing urban and rural areas
- identifying human and physical features of an area
History
In History we will be studying the ‘History of Transport’. We will know that:
- we can travel in many ways today
- transport options have changed in living memory
- Apollo 11 was the mission that sent two men to walk on the moon for the first time.
- options to travel in space have changed over time.
- The Wright Brothers invented the aeroplane
- Henry Ford developed the assembly line, a new way of making cars that made them affordable for everyone
- Robert and George Stephenson developed the ‘Rocket’, one of the first locomotives
Art
This term, we will be learning about simple printing. The children will make simple prints using their hands and explore how colour and shapes can make their prints more interesting. They will look at the work of an artist to help develop their own ideas. Pupils will also explore the environment and take rubbings of different textures. They will cut and stick shapes to create a printing plate and use this plate to make their own prints.
Design Technology
Pupils will be introduced to mechanisms in this unit and will gain an understanding of how important they are in our everyday lives. The focus is on sliders and levers, and pupils will create a moving picture which will develop their skills in marking out, measuring and cutting. They will join materials selecting from a range of methods, including tape, blu-tac, sticky fixers, and split pins. Folding will also be used and pupils will be asked to consider ways to strengthen or support materials.
Computing
In the first half term we will be looking at programming a moving robot. The children will be introduced to early programming concepts. We will explore using individual commands, both with other learners and as part of a computer program. We will identify what each command for the floor robot does, and use that knowledge to start predicting the outcome of programs.
In the second half term we will be looking at 'Grouping Data'. This unit introduces learners to data and information. We will be labelling, grouping and searching for information to understand that objects have many different labels that can be used to put them into groups.
RE
In RE we will be focusing on Jewish worldviews and ways of life. They will learn about texts from the Torah and their importance for Jewish people today. They will find out about the mezuzah and the Shema prayer and what they mean for believers. Later in the unit, pupils will find out about Shabbat and Chanukah, discussing why Jewish people mark these times, what they learn from stories found in the Torah and why they are important today.
Music
This term we will be focusing on listening and appraising a piece of music. The children will be improvising a simple rhythm and composing a simple melody using two given notes. We will be thinking about things an audience might enjoy.
PE
During the first half of term, we will be looking at dance. The unit of work will challenge pupils to respond to rhythm and patterns through their movements. Pupils will learn how to control and co-ordinate their bodies to perform a motif. In addition, pupils will explore various dynamics and movement qualities as they create movement patterns.
In the second half of term, we will be developing our ball skills. We will be working on catching and throwing and developing our hand eye coordination. We will be building our skills alongside playing partner and team games.
PSHE
This term, Year 1 will be focusing on Living in the Wider World. The children will learn what rules are and why they are important. They will explore different ways we care for people, animals and other living things, as well as how we can look after the environment. Pupils will also learn about the benefits of using the internet and how people find things out and communicate safely with others online. In addition, they will discover how different strengths and interests are needed for different jobs and learn about the people whose jobs help us in the community.
Homework
Please continue to ensure that your child practises their spellings and reading at home. We also recommend that you enjoy reading and discussing a longer, high-quality text with your child.
Kind regards,
Mrs Searle
